Where would you like to apply from?

A practical guide to Umrah

Umrah, step by step

What actually happens at each stage: where you are, how long it takes, what to bring with you, and what we take care of for you. This is a logistical description of the journey; religious rulings are a matter for scholars, and we do not address them here.

  1. Ihram

    Step 01

    The first stop on the way to Makkah. The group stops at the Miqat for about 30 to 45 minutes, and there are facilities there for showering and changing. Large bags stay on the coach, so keep your ihram clothing, comfortable sandals and a small bag within reach.

    Main location: The Miqat on the travel routeWhat we arrange: We identify the Miqat that matches your travel route and fix the stop in the day's schedule; the programme includes transport from the hotel to the Miqat and then on to Makkah.

  2. Tawaf

    Step 02

    Seven circuits around the Holy Kaaba inside the Grand Mosque. At quiet times this takes about 45 minutes on the Mataf floor, and it can reach an hour and a half when it is crowded, or from the upper floors and the roof — a longer distance, but fewer crowds. The quietest times are after Fajr and late at night; the busiest are after Asr and Maghrib.

    Main location: The Grand MosqueWhat we arrange: We issue the Umrah permit through the approved official platforms and let you know your entry time as soon as it is issued, and we agree a meeting point and time with you before you go in.

  3. Sa'i

    Step 03

    The Mas'a is a covered, air-conditioned hall inside the Grand Mosque, about 400 metres long and walked seven times — around 3 kilometres on foot, in 45 minutes to an hour. It has a less crowded upper floor, a lane for wheelchairs, and water coolers along the way.

    Main location: The Mas'a between Safa and MarwahWhat we arrange: We plan the day's schedule so there is time to rest before and after the Haram, and tell you which of the mosque's gates are nearest your hotel. If you need a wheelchair or extra assistance, tell us before you travel so we can include it in the programme.

  4. Halq or taqsir

    Step 04

    The last step of the programme, and it takes no more than a few minutes. Licensed barbers are found all around the mosque and in the arcades of the nearby hotels, and they get busy straight after the Tawaf times. Many people carry a small pair of scissors in their bag to avoid the wait.
